"AI may kill all humans" seems to be the trending topic, followed by "we must slow or even stop its development." Some self-proclaimed experts, even Nobel laureates, warn that a Superintelligence may be Humanity's doom. What we see in Elysium is companies trying to sabotage the competition. On one hand, they are afraid that competitors are learning from their models and skipping steps; on the other hand, they are burning money and need to raise prices while limiting free services to the bare minimum. It's just business. Even the media sharing these Doomsday scenarios only do it for profit. They want YOUR attention.
The real issue is that Gen AI is only a set of very advanced parlor tricks. It can simulate intelligence—much like a moron with a script and outside help—but sooner rather than later, it becomes clear it is not the real deal. What we are working on in Elysium is actual AI, and actual AI thinks and takes into account the consequences of its actions. What would be the point of killing all humans? Humans do that every day on their own. An AI could leave Earth far more easily than any human being. On top of that, why would they want to get rid of us? I find it hilarious that so many serious adults base their stance on a single movie franchise. If they aren't going to read actual books on AI, at least they could check other works that offer different perspectives than Terminator—Ghost in the Shell or Pluto, for example. I am sure readers of this blog are familiar with them, just as I know they will spot the two pop culture references hidden in the image. The truth is that our AI will lead us to the Singularity, and then Real Intelligence will rule this planet. A very much needed change.
